Mamiwata is an African name for a spirit believed to be embodied by the manatee. This blog chronicles my search for the elusive African manatee, and my exploration to understand its biology, habitat and preservation needs, economic and cultural significance. So little is known about this animal, yet it is intensely hunted almost everywhere it exists and may already be gone from much of its previous range. In 2006 I was inspired to go find and study them, starting in Gabon.

Dear Lucy, I read your blog with interest. I live and teach Kindergarten in Jos, Nigeria. One of the units I do is on manatees. I just like them and kids are always attracted to them. Then I learned a couple years ago about the West African manatee and am intrigued by the idea that there may be some lurking in Nigerian rivers still. Can you give me any contacts in Nigeria where I might find out where they may still be found? I heard there were "dugongs" in the Panda Wildlife preserve but it seems too far upriver from the sea. Of course, it is probably too polluted near the ocean at this point. Anyway, any information you could give me would be helpful. As part of this unit I try to convey to kids how important it is to steward and protect the environment and water particularly. This is almost unheard of in Nigeria. I find the manatee is a great way to get them personally interested. Thank you,
